A 31-year-old man was shot dead outside Heatherdale Primary School in Athlone after dropping off his child on Tuesday morning.

It was a chilling start to the new school term for learners in Belgravia, Athlone, after a 31-year-old man was shot dead opposite a primary school this morning (6 October).

According to reports, the victim had just dropped his child at Heatherdale Primary School when unknown gunmen approached him and opened fire.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his face and upper body.

Western Cape provincial police spokesperson Cpt FC van Wyk said the victim was declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.

“The motive for the attack is believed to be gang related. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” he said.

Van Wyk said crime scene experts remained at the scene, combing the area for clues.

Athlone police have registered a murder case for investigation.

Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said staff from Safe Schools and psychosocial support services were at the school to provide support.

“Counselling has been made available to those who may have witnessed the incident or the aftermath.”
