Maitland residents are living in fear and calling for increased police visibility following a shooting that left four men wounded.
The incident took place at the corner of Coronation Road and 1st Avenue on Thursday 1 October.
According to reports, the four victims sustained serious injuries and were transported to a medical facility for treatment. One has since been discharged.
Graham Daniels, safety and security officer for the Maitland Ratepayers and Residents Association (MRRA), said residents should not have to live in fear in their own homes.
“Residents should not have to live with the fear that incidents of this nature can occur in their neighbourhoods. MRRA calls on the relevant law-enforcement authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding this shooting and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law.”
Daniels offered his thoughts, prayers and support for those affected.
“We pray for their full and speedy recovery. This incident once again highlights the serious concerns surrounding safety and violent crime within our communities.”
He appealed to anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and inform the police.
“We also appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information that could assist the investigation to report it directly to police.
“MRRA remains committed to constructive engagement with police, Neighbourhood Watch structures and all relevant safety stakeholders in seeking practical solutions to the ongoing safety and security challenges facing our community.”
Provincial police spokesperson Const Ndakhe Gwala said Maitland police are investigating four counts of attempted murder.
She said the motive for the attack forms part of the investigation and that no suspects have been arrested.
