A 31-year-old Kensington man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for shooting two police officers in an April 2024 attack, leaving one with life-changing injuries.

The Cape Town Regional Court sentenced Tohier Adams on Tuesday 28 July after finding him guilty of four charges, including two counts of attempted murder.

He received 25 years’ imprisonment for each of the two attempted murder charges, five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and two years for possession of ammunition.

The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently.

The two constables, who were attached to the Crime Prevention Unit at Kensington Police Station, were on patrol when they came under fire at the corner of Lugmag Avenue and Drommedaris Road in Ysterplaat.

Const Ashley Bauman, who was 34 at the time, was seriously wounded and lost a kidney.

His colleague, Const Siphetho Zibaya, was also shot at, but escaped unharmed.

Adams handed himself over to police the day after the shooting.

Kensington Police Station commander Lt Col Nkosinathi Losini welcomed the sentence, saying it reflected the seriousness of attacks on police officers.

“We are happy with the outcome. It took some time, but justice has been served.”
