Former president Jacob Zuma is in jail.
The 79-year-old Zuma, who was sentenced to 15 months in jail last week for contempt of court by the Constitutional Court, handed himself over just before midnight last night, July 7.
The contempt of court judgement stems from Zuma’s failure to appear in front of the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into his alleged corruption during his time in power.
He was initially supposed to hand himself over by midnight on Sunday, July 4, before police would step in but instead gathered with hundreds of supporters outside his homestead, Nkandla, who refused to let Zuma be arrested.
Zuma was given another chance to hand himself over quietly, before police intervention, last night, July 7.
In a short Twitter statement by The Zuma Foundation in the early hours of this morning, it was announced that the former president had decided to comply with the court order.
“Please be advised that [former] President Zuma has decided to comply with the incarceration order,” the statement read.
“He is on his way to way to hand himself over to a Correctional Services Facility in KZN.”
The Zuma Foundation added that a full statement will be issued in due course.
