A TROPHY with inscriptions from 1979 to 2010 for the school that won the “Best Article of the Year” competition is once again up for grabs.

Primary and high schools are encouraged to expose their schools and learners to this process to enhance the scope for the development of writing and reading among South Africans.

Considering the depressing statistics regarding reading in South Africa, Port Elizabeth-born Jeffrey Jaftha has challenged all schools, especially in the Eastern Cape, to avail 10-15 minutes to reading.

Jaftha has the personal goal of setting up 100 writers’ clubs within two years. The purpose is to encourage and assist writers on their journey towards publications.

The focus is not only on schools, but also tertiary institutions, churches, cultural groups, circles of friends and retirees.

Jaftha states that the initial process started here in Port Elizabeth, with visits to schools like Frank Joubert Primary, De Vos Milan Primary, Gelvandale High School and others.

A “Writing In The Park” workshop in St George’s Park was also presented with learners from Paterson Secondary School, Lawson Brown High School, Harvest Christian School, Victoria Park High, Frank Joubert Primary School, Clarendon Park Primary School and others.

The journey will continue on Saturday, February 22, with a “Breakfast with Poetry” event at a beachfront hotel at 08:15 for 08:30.

The purpose of this event, other than sharing tips for publishing, is to allow writers of all genres to share a few lines of their work, to network and to share one or two tips on how to sell publications.

Entry to the event is R80, and R60 for full-time students. For attendees who wish to market and sell their work, the cost is R130.
