A middle-aged woman from Morningside died at her home after she was attacked by her own dog last night (Monday).

Belinda Jonker (64) and her 66-year-old husband left their house in Summerville Street at approximately 21:30 when the incident took place.

It is alleged that Jonker had difficulty getting into the car and while her husband assisted her, their 4-year-old pitbull attacked her.

Police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said that the husband tried in vain to get the dog off his wife.

“He called for help from the neighbours. They were able to get the dog off the woman and tied him to a tree,” she said.

Jonker sustained several wounds and was declared dead on the scene.

“The Animal Anti-Cruelty League was called to remove the dog from the house. An inquest was opened and is under investigation by Kabega Park detectives,” Janse van Rensburg added.
