EC flyweight champion Olwethu Rula defends title
EASTERN Cape flyweight champion, Olwethu Rula, had to fight hard to defend her title successfully against Mihle Tuli in an eight-round bout during the tournament sanctioned by Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions at Tambo Village Hall in Kariega recently.
The Buffalo City Metro challenger showed little respect for the champion. It was a close match, with fans kept on their feet by the two boxers from round one to round eight.
At the end of the fight, fans gave the two boxers a round of applause for entertaining them. Nevertheless, judges, Prince Mbamabaza and Nkosinathi Zamele, scored the fight 78-74, and Vuyokazi Ncata scored it 77-75, with all three judges favouring Rula, who successfully retained her title.
In the main supporting event, Mbulelo Gwabeni lost on points to Sanele Magwaza during the junior flyweight division over six rounds. There were seven undercard fights that also thrilled fans. In the junior lightweight division over six rounds, Bandile Daniels defeated Aphiwe Magobiyane on points.
Milani George overcame Siyamkela Gqubule on points in their mini-flyweight four-rounder. In the junior featherweight division clash over four rounds, fans witnessed Siphesihle Mpolweni win over Ayabulela Mngxuma by way of technical knockout (TKO) in the third round.
Masixole Ntunga could not finish the fight after being brought down by Njongo Skweyiya by TKO in the third round in their junior featherweight four-round clash. All judges unanimously scored the fight in favour of Maxhoba Paraffin as the winner on points over Luthando Calata in their mini-flyweight division fight over four rounds.
East London boxer, Somila Jada, defeated local lad, Louis Phillip Jnr, on points in their junior-flyweight division fight. Ayabonga September saw himself lose to Uyanda Mtongana on points during their bantamweight four-round bout.
Highbury FC lose home game against Baroka FC
DESPITE having abundant scoring opportunities, Highbury FC went down 1-0 to Baroka FC during their Motsepe Foundation Championship match at Gelvandale Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The home side came on strongly against Baroka FC, but the team from Ga Ma-Mphahlele in Limpopo came to Gqeberha with only one thing on their minds: to collect three league points.
Baroka’s skilful player, Thuso Mogale, was rewarded with a top-notch goal that revived his side in the 31st minute from a cross by left full-back, Sibusiso Mabiliso.
Chippa United head coach Joel Masutha’s side claimed a hard-fought 1-0 away victory over Highbury.
