NMB Basketball Association League results
THE Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre was filled to capacity when the Nelson Mandela Bay Basketball (NMBBA) League games took place on Sunday.
According to NMBBA president, Xolisa Ndzimase, the male teams play three-legged finals, but the ladies, who played semi-finals, will face each other in the finals at Raymond Mhlaba Sports Centre on November 17. Ndzimase added that the team that wins two legs will be crowned as champions. The male teams were grouped into three divisions.
In the first ladies’ semi-final, the University of Fort Hare went down 27-19 to Madibaz Ladies. In the last semi-final, Gemineyez Ladies booked themselves a place in the finals after they overcame Rhodes University Ladies 34-31. Gemineyez player Mthikazi Makhanda contributed immensely to her side, while Asekhona Zondi played an instrumental role for Rhodes.
In the Division Three first-leg finals, Zwide Eagles gave a good account of themselves in their 40-35 defeat to Jaybag Giants. In the Division Two first-leg finals, B-Blessed Basketball Club had a tough assignment when they defeated Rhodes University 74-69. The hot favourites, PE Comets, will have to register a win in their next second leg as Rhodes University narrowly defeated them 95-94 during their nail-biting first-leg finals.
Lisakhanya Mxoxozi, Luvuko Manana, Athi Kwekwani, and Asemahle Klaas collected many points for PE Comets. Siyamthanda Mthethwa, Andile Ngcobo, Keabetse Morolong, and Arnold Masvosve were on top of their game for the Makhanda outfit.
Camper United deny Shining Stars three league points
CAMPER United scored a late equaliser to deny Shining Stars all three points during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Hollywoodbets Men’s Regional League end-to-end game at Motherwell NU 11 Stadium on Saturday.
It was Stars who took the lead courtesy of their skilful midfielder, Athembela Majola, in the 10th minute of the first half, with Camper goalkeeper, Ayola Tiki, well-beaten. Stars striker, Bomibethu Fina, failed to connect the ball to the back of the net after Majola laid a perfect pass to him in the 32nd minute. Vuyolwethu Dlabongo delivered a perfect cross to Fina, but he failed to slot it into the back of the empty net with Tiki beaten in the 43rd minute.
The seasoned player, Anele Ngqunge, who was put into the fray in the 46th minute, put Camper into the game. Camper wingers, Ahluma Ncilata and Siyavuya Davids, combined well with Ngqunge. Stars left fullback, Anothando Ngwendu,;; had a torrid time as Davids was a constant threat to the defender.
Ncilata was dropped to the bench for Milani Mrwadi while Buntu Mkonko was substituted for Davids. The two late super substitutes made their presence felt. Mkonko dribbled past Ngwendu and delivered a perfect pass which Ngqunge headed into the back of the net in the 78th minute.
Stars were reduced to ten men after their central defender, Akhona Jakuja, was red-carded following his two yellow cards. Stars skipper, Luzuko Tose, managed to marshal his defence outstandingly. Fina ran down the left flank and sent a salvo which Tiki collected comfortably in the 80th minute. Camper could have taken the lead as Mkonko’s thunderous shot was stopped by Stars goalkeeper, Mahle Peter, in the 86th minute.
