A WELL-KNOWN township business, EzamaNtlane Hiring Services, held a successful soccer tournament at the Walmer High School and Walmer Community Fields in Walmer Township recently.

Some teams came from as far afield as Kuyga, while others hailed from New Brighton, Kwazakhele, Motherwell and Walmer. The tournament was played in a straight knockout system.

Three Walmer teams made the semi-finals along with one visiting side, Motherwell Academy. In the local derby semi-final, Real Madrid FC advanced to finals when they won 1-0 over Young Cosmos.

Home supporters saw Peace United lose 3-0 to Motherwell Academy in their semi-final. Motherwell Academy played to a goalless draw against Real Madrid FC during their final. The game had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out, with Motherwell Academy overcoming Real Madrid FC 4-2.

One of the tournament sponsors, Thulani Mayola, stated that the games were “immensely tough”. “I am very pleased to see all the teams giving a good account of themselves. The teams displayed high levels of discipline and there were no problems. I am over the moon because there was huge support. The fans were very enthusiastic and that is encouraging for the players and sponsors,” said Mayola.

Motherwell Academy went home with the first prize of R4 000, a floating trophy and gold medals. Real Madrid FC, received the runners-up prize of R2 000 and silver medals. Motherwell Academy skipper, Yanga Zidepa, received the Player of the Tournament trophy.
