MOTHERWELL NU 5-based Vulumzi Senior Secondary School honoured their outstanding Grade 12 educators and prominent community figures who played a significant role in the Grade 12 learners’ lives during their glittering teachers’ awards ceremony function on Friday.

Ward 59 Councillor Mazangwa Dano, EnviroServ Waste Management, represented by Thembinkosi Mafana, Angela Rogers, Bishop Mlungisi Matroos, SADTU Motherwell negotiator Bubele Stali, SGB members, parents and local principals were in attendance.

According to Vulumzi SSS principal, Mzimkhulu Fina, the objective of the function was to motivate the Grade 12 educators who put their school on the map, as it achieved an 82.9% pass rate in the 2019 matric exams. Fina said, “These educators had worked very hard.

“They were selfless in so much they sacrificed their own time for the sake of our learners.

“In 2017, we achieved a pass rate of 57% and in 2018, the school jumped to 64%. In 2019, we told ourselves that our target should be more than 80%. Hence, we reached our goal,” Fina said.

The guest speaker, Arnold Jordaan, hailed the staff for being the agents of change in the community.

“Team effort happens with a good leadership. Teachers should lead themselves in a positive way.

“Teachers are the agents of change in the community. It is hard work that has been done by Vulumzi SSS educators,” Jordaan said.

Physical science from 65% to 83%: taught by Zanyiwe Mooi

Accounting from 70% to 100% : taught by Daniswa Phillip

Agricultural science from 64% to 100%: taught by Ntombekhaya Tose

History from 85% to 100%: taught by Mzikayise Khoboka

Life sciences from 82% to 100%: taught by Nono Quza
