A YOUNG, vibrant bass guitarist, who hails from the Northern Areas of Nelson Mandela Bay, will share his musical talent with local audiences at the PE Opera House on Sunday, November 4.
Elviro Vrolik first picked up the bass at the age of 13 and, like most musicians, started off playing in church. As he honed his skill and craft in the gospel community he later joined the New Afro Teens band now known as Modern Tribe.
In 2014 he enrolled at the Nelson Mandela University under the tutelage of jazz lecturer John Edwards and bass guitar teacher Andrew Warneke. Vrolik has since formed part of the university’s Afro Jazz Quintet and Big Band.
He is a very sought after session musician playing for some of the hottest talent to come from the Bay, such as SAMA award-winner Phumlani Mtiti, Retsi Pule, Titi Luzipo, Creshwell October and Lefa Mosea to name but a few.
2018 has proved to be a good year for Vrolik. In September he was awarded the Jazz Bryars Scholarship and formed part of Sizwe Yaze and Ntlaa Swana’s bands, which were selected to play at this year’s prestigious Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival.
Through his love and passion for music and dedication to his craft, Vrolik hopes to touch people from all walks of life with his music and be a formidable and unforgettable bass guitarist following in the footsteps of the great Marcus Miller.
He will be performing live at the The Barn Theatre of the PE Opera House on Sunday at 17:00.
