Police in Despatch are investigating a case of malicious
damage to property after a truck transporting tyres worth millions on its
trailer was allegedly set alight last night (Thursday) during protest action on
the R75.
The estimated value of the 1 800 tyres and the truck damaged
in the fire, is R7 million.
According to police spokesperson, Capt. Gerda Swart, it alleged
that the 61-year-old driver noticed poles lying in the road and stopped the
truck. The driver then saw a group of people approaching the truck, allegedly pelting
it with stones.
“The driver got out of the truck and ran towards the
direction of Despatch. It is further alleged that the truck was set alight.
Damages are estimated at R7 million, both the truck and content,” she said.
“There are no arrests at this stage,” Swart added.
