Two suspects arrested after rhino cow and calf are killed in Komani

KOMANI – Two suspects have been arrested following a rhino poaching incident at a game reserve in Komani, Eastern Cape, in which a mother rhino and her calf were shot and their horns removed.

The suspects, aged 35 and 36, were arrested on Saturday, 31 October, following a joint operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), private security companies and other stakeholders.

According to a statement issued by the office of the District Commissioner in the Eastern Cape, police received information from crime intelligence at approximately 06:55 on Saturday that two rhinos had been killed at a local game reserve.

A team of police officers immediately responded to the scene, where intelligence gathered during the investigation led to the identification of a vehicle believed to be connected to the incident.

At approximately 16:00, members of Red Guard Security spotted the vehicle at a filling station along Cathcart Road in Komani and alerted SAPS members.

Police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said a takedown operation was subsequently carried out, resulting in the arrest of two foreign nationals. A third suspect reportedly managed to flee and evade arrest.

Further investigations and follow-up operations led to the recovery of four rhino horns, a .375 calibre Holland and Holland Magnum rifle fitted with a silencer, as well as live ammunition.

Police also confiscated a Volkswagen Polo bearing Cape Town registration plates, which was allegedly used in the commission of the offence, three mobile phones and an unlicensed firearm with ammunition.

The two suspects were expected to appear before the Komani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 November.

They are facing charges relating to the illegal hunting of protected species, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen property, namely the rhino horns.
