Two men drowned at Maitlands Beach yesterday.
According to police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van
Rensburg, it is alleged that the two men, employees from a local racecourse, were
having lunch at the beach before deciding to go for a swim.
“One person suddenly disappeared underwater. When his
co-worker realised that he was in trouble, he attempted to assist, but was pulled
out to sea by a rip current,” Janse van Rensburg said.
The incident occurred at approximately 13:00. Police have opened
an inquest docket.
Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Bay mayor, Nqaba Bhanga, sent his
condolences to the families of the two men. “We would like to send our
condolences to the affected families. Any drowning is always a tragedy as no
family expects to hear such bad news when their family members had gone out to have
clean fun. We are crying and praying with them during this time,” Bhanga said.
He added that the metro
is currently investigating the incident.
