Two security guards died and a customer was injured after a cash-in-transit robbery at a shopping complex in Southernwood, East London this morning.
It is alleged that at approximately 08:15, three male suspects entered the complex while security guards, aged 48 and 49 years respectively, were busy collecting money from a retail shop at the complex.
According to national police spokesperson, Col. Brenda Muridili, one guard was standing at the entrance of the shop while the second guard was collecting the money from the safe inside the shop.
“While the guard who fetched the money from the safe was walking towards the exit, he was shot in the upper body. The second guard was also shot in the upper body,” Muridili said.
Both guards succumbed to their wounds at the scene.
During the shooting, a 58-year-old female inside the shop was wounded and later taken to Frere hospital. She is reportedly in a stable condition.
“The suspects got away with a bag of an undisclosed amount of money and two firearms belonging to the guards. They fled the scene in an unknown vehicle with no registration numbers,” she added.
Cases of cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder and murder are currently under investigation.
The case will be investigated by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations. Police are appealing to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to send tip-offs on the MySAPS App.
