Two ambulances were robbed in Nelson Mandela Bay over the course of the weekend.
During the first incident, ambulance personnel were busy assisting a patient in Ngqondela Street, KwaZakhele, at approximately 20:00 on Friday evening when the incident occurred.
According to police spokesperson, Capt. Gerda Swart, it is alleged that the ambulance staff were approached by three armed males and threatened. “The suspects robbed them of their medical equipment, cell phones and wallets,” Swart said.
“No arrests were made but detectives are following up on all possible leads. KwaZakhele detectives are investigating a case of armed robbery.”
The second case reported took place last night at approximately 18:15. According to Swart, the complainant was travelling with the ambulance in Daku Road and stopped at the red robot. Two unknown males approached the driver. One pointed a firearm and demanded cash and a cell phone.
“The driver informed the suspect that he does not have money and handed his private cell phone and the work cell phone over to the suspects. The suspects fled the scene on foot. The case will be investigated by KwaZakhele detectives,” Swart said.
She added that after talks with both ambulances services, it was decided that they will now be reporting to a police station first in order to be accompanied to a medical emergency by police.
