GQEBERHA – Tributes have been pouring in for beloved animal welfare advocate, drama teacher and community activist Linda-Louise Swain, who passed away peacefully at home with family in the early hours of Tuesday after a battle with terminal illness.

Swain was widely known across Nelson Mandela Bay for her tireless work in animal rescue and welfare through the Animal Anti-Cruelty League Port Elizabeth, while also dedicating many years to drama education and charity work within local schools and community organisations.

In an emotional tribute shared on social media, the Animal Anti-Cruelty League Port Elizabeth described her passing as “a devastating day” for the organisation.

“It is a devastating day for us – our beloved PRO Linda-Louise Swain, who was terminally ill, passed away,” the organisation said.

“Our hearts are shattered. You are with us in spirit as we continue the work you led us to do, Linda… we honour a beautiful compassionate soul, a true legend, who will never be forgotten.”

Animal welfare organisations across the metro also shared messages of grief and remembrance.

SPCA Uitenhage described Swain as “a truly incredible animal rescuer, advocate and activist for the animals of Nelson Mandela Bay”.

“Linda-Louise dedicated so much of her life to speaking up for those who could not speak for themselves. Her compassion, courage and unwavering love for animals touched countless lives and made a lasting difference in our community,” the organisation said.

Cat Care Port Elizabeth said Swain had been “a compassionate voice for those who could not speak for themselves”.

“Her kindness, dedication, and love touched the lives of so many animals and people throughout our community,” the organisation wrote.

“She fought her battle with such courage, grace, and strength, always carrying a heart full of love for every paw she helped and every life she touched.”

Beyond her animal welfare work, Swain was also remembered as a passionate and influential drama educator who impacted generations of learners.

Hoërskool Pearson High School paid tribute to its long-serving drama teacher, saying Swain had devoted herself wholeheartedly to the growth of drama at the school since joining the Pearson family in 2009.

“Her passion for the arts, her dedication to her students and her warm presence will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her,” the school said.

Together with Sharon Rother of Rother Swain Drama Studio, Swain helped build drama into “a space of creativity, confidence and excellence”, inspiring countless pupils over the years.

Clarendon Park Primary School also honoured Swain’s contribution to education, describing her as a “legendary drama educator”.

“Linda-Louise has guided, nurtured and mentored countless generations of Clarries pupils over many years, and has had a profound impact on the Clarries Family in an incredibly meaningful way,” the school said.

The school added that through her drama classes, productions, charity work and personal relationships, Swain created “a loving, kind and generous legacy”.

In a message shared by her family, loved ones thanked the many communities that supported Swain during the final months of her life.

“We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the vast communities that have really been there in the last few months for Linda-Louise,” the family wrote.

“It has been beautiful to witness the outpouring of love and support and to see how many lives Linda-Louise impacted, and how many people she connected with.”

The family described Swain as someone who lived “a full and meaningful life, filled with adventure, compassion and love”.

“We all carry the torch that Linda-Louise has left us, may it burn bright within each and every one of us,” the message read. “In caring for all living beings, showing kindness and compassion and giving of ourselves to make the world a better place; we can honour her life, memory, spirit and the values she held dear.”
