Trevor Noah, the host of America’s The Daily Show, announced that he would leave the show after seven years.

He made the announcement in a recorded segment of The Daily Show, which was posted on Twitter early this morning (South African time).

Noah took over from previous host and comedian Jon Stewart in 2015.

“I want to say thank you to the audience for an amazing seven years. It’s been wild, it’s been truly wild,” Noah said.

“I remember when we first started – so many people didn’t believe in us – I still think it was a crazy choice, but what a journey it has been. I just find myself filled with gratitude for the journey.

“It has been absolutely amazing, its something I never expected. I’ve realised after the seven years, my time is up, but in the most beautiful way. I’ve loved hosting this show. It’s been one of my greatest challenges, it’s been one of my greatest joys. I’ve loved trying to figure out how to make people laugh. We’ve laughed together, we’ve cried together.”

He talked about spending two years at home (due to the pandemic) not being able to do stand-up comedy, but when he had the chance to do stand-up comedy again, he realised there was another part of his life he wanted to continue exploring.

“I missed learning other languages, I missed going to other countries and putting on shows. I missed being everywhere doing everything.

He did not say when his last episode will be, but that it would be announced at a later stage.

“It’s not instant, I’m not disappearing,” he said. “Don’t worry. If I owe you money, I’ll still pay you!”

  • He will be touring South Africa next year from 31 August to 15 September for 12 shows. Tickets for this tour went on sale earlier this week. He will be visiting Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.
