AS the world observed Cleft & Craniofacial Awareness Month during July, the Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital and the Smile Foundation, together with Easigas (Pty) Ltd, joined forces to host a Smile Weekend, providing life-changing surgery for 25 children.
The initiative saw back-to-back surgeries scheduled to correct cleft lip, cleft palate, and other craniofacial conditions.
Smile Foundation, inspired by Nelson Mandela’s legacy, has been dedicated to providing crucial medical treatment to children in need. This Smile Weekend, held during Nelson Mandela Month in his home province, embodies Madiba’s dream of helping those who need it most.
Among the children who underwent surgery was a six-year-old girl from Kwazakhele, who suffered severe burn injuries in a household accident. She received ear reconstruction and scalp tissue expander surgery, giving her a new lease on life.
Tarri Parfitt, CEO of Smile Foundation, expressed gratitude to the medical professionals and hospital staff involved.
“Your selflessness and dedication inspire us. You embody compassion and skill, allowing us to continue honouring Madiba’s legacy of uplifting underprivileged children,” she said.
Smile Foundation also extended their heartfelt thanks to Easigas for sponsoring the Smile Weekend, saying their support had been crucial in realising the success of this initiative.
