THE Ward 59 Heritage Month Youth Soccer Tournament was used as a tool to combat crime in the Motherwell NU 5, NU 6 and NU 7 areas on Sunday.
The programme was organised for u/11, u/13, u/15 and u/17 teams. The tournament was played in a round robin format before ending in a knockout format.
According to Ward 59 Councillor, Mazangwa Dano, his office decided to organise the tournament in order to keep the youth off the streets. Dano said that sport was the right tool to keep the youth busy instead of involving themselves in criminal activities.
Tomorrow Stars B defeated Tomorrow Stars A 1-0 in their exciting u/11 final, while Swartkopsvalley United Brothers (SUBS) collected silverware after winning 6-5 in sudden death over Tomorrow Stars following their goalless regulation time score during their u/13 final.
Scorpions went down 1-0 to Tomorrow Stars in their u/15 final.
SUBS, who were crowned as the u/17 champions, won 5-4 on penalties over Scorpion FC after a 2-2 drawn final. The winning teams went home with the trophies and gold medals, while the runners-up settled for silver medals.
Dano stated that he was unhappy about the fact that the parents did not come to support their own children.
“I am a bit worried because the parents of these children did not come to see them play.
“These kids could perform better if their parents were in attendance. The moral support of parents is highly needed at all times.
“I appeal to parents to come in numbers because the games will take place at Motherwell NU 6 Grounds during these school holidays,” Dano said.
