CHESS players and enthusiasts will be in for a treat when the 2019 Boardwalk Pearson Chess Open takes place from Monday, March 25.
Chess grandmasters and emerging chess players will be competing in the event, which is accredited and recognised by the World Chess Federation.
“The Boardwalk is honoured to partner with Pearson High School to stage this prestigious tournament again in 2019. The Eastern Cape is home to many chess enthusiasts, many of whom have represented South Africa internationally,” said The Boardwalk’s general manager, Mike van Vuuren.
“Certainly, seeing the players, especially the youth, coming through the ranks and becoming recognised, is most inspiring and we look forward to seeing them all in action at the tournament.”
The Grandmasters Norm field – which is by invitation only – features players from India, France and Belarus, who will compete from March 25 to April 3 in a series of competitions.
The FIDE Open – open to all players – will take place from March 28 to 31 and the Development section – for primary school learners – on March 30.
The Grandmasters Norm field and FIDE Open will be rated by FIDE, Chess South Africa (CHESSA) and the URS.
The tournament runs daily from March 25 to April 3 at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre.
Players are called to register to compete in the 2019 Boardwalk Pearson Chess Open before 20:00 on March 25.
