GQEBERHA – Three suspects have been arrested on charges of bribery by the Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combatting Unit (CCU).

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, the arrests demonstrate SAPS’ firm stance against criminal activities that undermine justice and reinforce the organisation’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.

“On Tuesday, 24 February 2026, at approximately 19:30, members of the SAPS Crime Combatting Unit (CCU) received information about a white Nissan Magnite travelling from Port Alfred towards Gqeberha displaying false registration plates,” she said. “Members responded immediately and intercepted the vehicle on the N2 near the Coega Industrial Area.”

Janse Van Rensburg added that upon inspection, it was established that the registration plates and licence disc did not correspond with the vehicle’s description. “Whilst members were conducting further investigations, the suspects attempted to bribe the police with cash amounting to R19 500.”

She also stated that the incident was immediately reported to the Commander and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), who provided guidance on the way forward. “All three suspects, one male (33) and two females aged 47 and 54, were arrested for bribery.”

Janse Van Rensburg said that the suspects were detained, and the vehicle was impounded for further investigation with all relevant role players informed.

“The motive for the attempted bribe remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing,” she said, adding that the suspects are expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court soon.
