Two cases of culpable homicide are being investigated by police after three people died in two separate accidents over the weekend.
In the first incident one person died and a passenger was injured in an accident on the Groendal Road outside Kariega at about 14:00 on Saturday, 25 February.
According to Captain Gerda Swart, police spokesperson, it is alleged that the driver of a Grey Chevrolet and a passenger were travelling on the said road, when the driver allegedly lost control over the vehicle and overturned.
“The driver sadly succumbed to his injuries whilst the passenger was admitted to a local hospital. The name and age of the deceased will be released once next of kin was informed. Investigations are continuing,” Swart said.
In the second, unrelated accident two people died on the M4, North End, also on Saturday.
Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, police spokesperson, said that at approximately 17:20 a white Opel Corsa was travelling on the freeway, and according to witnesses the driver was overtaking vehicles.
“The driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the side barrier and then overturned. There were five men in the vehicle. All were taken to hospital for further treatment, however, two of the passengers (both 19) died in hospital due to the injuries they sustained. The names will only be released once they have been identified by their next of kin,” Janse van Rensburg said.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident and the investigation is ongoing.
