The taxi strike that has been wreaking havoc across Nelson Mandela Bay with violent protests, has come to an end.
Nelson Mandela Bay mayor, Nqaba Bhanga, made the announcement last night, Friday, May 28.
“I am happy to announce that the taxi strike is over. Taxis will be available as from [today],” Bhanga said.
“We thank all role-players and stakeholders for coming to the table and resolving this. Our residents deserve better and as the Metro Leadership we are proud to have facilitated an amicable outcome. I will continue to fight to take Nelson Mandela Bay forward again,” he added.
In the meantime, reports were received by police about service delivery protests that started in the early hours of this morning on the R75 and Rocklands Road.
According to police spokesperson, Capt. André Beetge, these two roads were closed as of this morning. “A truck was also torched during the early hours of this morning. The situation in that area is still volatile and it is advised that alternate routes be used for the safety of motorists and their vehicles. The protestors are stoning passing vehicles,” Beetge said.
