Taxi strike leads to road closures, pelting of stones and burning tyres

Taxis were towed this morning to clear Stanford Road.


Less than an hour after certain roads blocked by taxis during a strike that started in the early hours of this morning, July 14, were reopened, protesters starting blockading the Windvogel intersection in Stanford Road. 

Motorists on their way to work has to turn around and find alternative ways early this morning when taxis made a barricade across Stanford Road at the Stanford Road bridge.

Director of Traffic and Licencing in the metro, Warren Prins, said a little more than an hour ago that the taxis were towed to clear the road.

“Everything is open and traffic is flowing again in Stanford Road and Durban Road,” Prins said at approximately 09:30.

However, about 20 minutes ago, protesters started blocking the Windvogel intersection with tyres.

“We are busy sending traffic [officers] there so that we can start diverting traffic. The road is closed and it’s reportedly stone-throwing taking place there,” Prins said.

Prins said that police are still on the scene.

Protests started yesterday afternoon when the R75 was closed due to protesters pelting cars with stones.
