In a joint effort by a private security company and members of SAPS Mount Road, three alleged robbery suspects were arrested after a 15-year-old learner was robbed of her cell phone while walking in 2nd Avenue, Newton Park, yesterday afternoon, May 30.

It is alleged that at about 12:00, the suspects approached the teenager, threatened her and grabbed her cellphone. A patrolling security official witnessed the incident and chased after the suspects. He succeeded in arresting an 18-year-old male. While the suspects were running away, they threw the cell phone on the ground.

Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that at the same time, SAPS Mount Road Vispol Task Team members, assisted by their Crime Prevention members, noticed the commotion and stopped to enquire. “Further investigations led the team to a house in Shauder Avenue in Holland Park. The second suspect (18) was found standing in the yard. The third suspect (19) was also arrested at his house in Shauder Avenue,” Naidu said.

“The suspects are detained on a charge of robbery and expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court during the week,” she added.

“In order to win the war against crime and render a professional service to our communities, it is crucial for the SAPS and private security companies to work together in tightening our grip on crime and criminals. These are crucial ingredients needed to win the war against crime and keeping our communities safe.”
