Two suspects have been arrested after allegedly stealing appliances worth R150 000 from a furniture store in Govan Mbeki Avenue.

The suspects, aged 27 and 35 years, allegedly broke into the
store by forcefully opening a roll-up garage door and stole approximately 20 television
sets and other electrical appliances, worth approximately R150 000.

The incident took place at about 08:00.

According to police spokesperson, Capt. André Beetge, Humewood
detectives followed up on information and spotted two suspects running in the
direction of Upper Hill carrying TVs and appliances. The suspects were arrested
and in their possession were three TVs, a portable air cooler and music system.
The goods were handed back to the retailer.

“The suspects were detained on charges of the possession of
suspected stolen property. Additional charges of housebreaking could be added
at a later stage of the investigation. More arrests are expected,” Beetge said.

They are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha)
Magistrates Court tomorrow.

“Police are urging the community, especially our second-hand
dealers, to be on the lookout for people attempting to sell them new TVs and
appliances. Buying second-hand goods also places the need for buyers to make
sure that the goods they are purchasing is from a legal seller or owner.
Failure to do so and buying stolen property could land buyers in hot water and
even criminal prosecution according to criminal law,” Beetge added.
