The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Metro Police has made a successful arrest
after officers caught three men red-handed tampering with electricity infrastructure and in
possession of stolen copper cables in Kempston Road, Gqeberha.

The arrest took place around 01:50 on Sunday, 12 February as members were busy
patrolling in the area.

According to Municipal spokesperson, Mamela Ndamase, the Metro Police officers noticed three men tampering with an electricity box and approached
them to investigate.

“Upon investigation they found the suspects with copper cables in a bag while one of them had a
hacksaw in their possession,” Ndamase said.

NMBM Safety and Security Mayoral Committee Member, Lawrence Troon, has welcomed
the arrest and commended the officers for their quick action.

“The suspects were detained at the Algoa Park Police Station on charges of cable theft and
infrastructure damage. We welcome these arrests as they mean we are taking away thieves that
are crippling service delivery in our City,” said Troon.

Members of the public are urged to report any suspected cable theft case by calling NMBM
Security Services on 041 508 5576.
