Suspect nabbed with abalone worth almost R200 000

A man has been arrested in North End after abalone worth almost R200 000 was found in his possession yesterday, October 19.


A man has been arrested in North End after abalone worth almost R200 000 was found in his possession yesterday, October 19.

According to police spokesperson, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, at approximately 12:30, Mount Road members were busy with crime prevention duties and while patrolling in Frazer Street, they noticed a white Toyota Corolla with one occupant inside.

“When the driver noticed the police vehicle he immediately acted suspicious by parking the vehicle, locking it and standing next to the vehicle. Upon further enquiries the members searched the vehicle and in the boot they found 12 black bags containing abalone,” Janse van Rensburg said. 

The members arrested the man and confiscated 1 418 units of abalone with an estimated value of R168 000. 

The suspect is detained for contravention of the Marine Living Resource Act, 19 of 1998 Regulation 36 sub sect 1 – illegal possession of abalone and will appear in the Gqeberha  Magistrate’s Court soon.
