A suspect in the kidnapping of Dr. Bongani Nqini in Gqeberha is set to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 8.
According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, the 42-year-old driver of the vehicle suspected to be involved in the abduction of Nqini was intercepted in Sidwell and arrested on Thursday evening, July 4. This occurred after the Hawks and Tactical Response Team (TRT) received information on the whereabouts of Dr. Nqini. He was rescued unharmed.
Earlier in the week, Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba told PE Express that suspects kidnapped the doctor outside his workplace in KwaZakhele on Monday, July 1, at approximately 14:45. Four masked suspects allegedly barged into Nqini’s surgery and abducted him at gunpoint.
“It is reported that they forced him into his vehicle and fled the scene. Cash to the value of R6000 and six cellphones belonging to patients were stolen. It is further alleged that an additional R50,000 in cash from Nqini’s vehicle was stolen.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, commended the joint effort of the team in ensuring the swift rescue of the doctor, who is said to be a community builder.
