A student (24) from Walter Sisulu
University has been arrested in connection with the attack on police and the
burning of a SAPS Nyala two days ago.

The violent incident took place near Walter
Sisulu University’s Mthatha Campus during student protests.

He was allegedly part of a
group of protestors of which some allegedly attacked members of the SAPS and
set a Nyala alight with two occupants inside. 

According to national
Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Vish Naidoo, four policemen were injured
and taken to a local hospital where one is being treated for
his injuries.

“The National Commissioner directed the SAPS Provincial
Management to mobilise the 72-hour Activation Plan which culminated in the
arrest of the student about 48 hours after the incident happened. He was
arrested on the N2 near the Walter Sisulu University and was expected to appear
in court this morning on charges of public violence, malicious damage to
property and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. More arrests are
expected,” said Naidoo.

He added that they are appealing to anyone
who has any information relating to this crime to contact the SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
