A STREET lighting campaign has been launched by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Electricity and Energy Directorate aimed at revamping certain areas of the Bay.
This initiative saw an astounding R35 million being spent on street lights in areas, such as the M17, which is notoriously known as a high-accident zone, and areas, such as Bloemendal, Kleinskool and Ferguson Road, in New Brighton.
These areas were identified as the areas often experiencing heightened levels of crime due to insufficient lighting that gives criminals an advantage to attack and escape without being identified.
The project to revamp these areas was instigated following the adoption of the Bay’s integrated development project which highlighted the importance of creating a safe city for all its residents. The Mayoral Committee Member for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy, Councillor Masixole Zinto, recently led a delegation of the standing committee to inspect the progress of the revamp project.
The inspection also involved the interaction of community members who have been affected by the criminal activities in these areas.
“The areas were identified according to assessments, which included an analysis of the crime statistics of Nelson Mandela Bay.
“It must be noted that this administration is committed to boost the township and Northern Areas’ economy,” said Zinto.
“It starts by creating an environment that is conducive to that.
“Safety is key,” said Zinto.
Zinto further indicated his satisfaction in the progress of the revamp project though further work needed to be done to ensure the success of the project. – REPORTER
