VEEPLAAS Township community sports developer and motivational speaker Gcobani Stafaans organised a successful sports day which brought the youth together at the Funimfundo Primary School grounds on June 16.

According to Stafaans, the aim of the day was to unite the youth through sport.

He said that sport was the proper method used to fight crime and to bring people of different races together.

“This event is very important to the people of this country. The 1976 students fought against apartheid, but today our youth are faced with a number of social ills.

“Today it seems that some youth do not realise that crime has a negative impact on their future.

“Sport keeps them busy and helps them acquire life skills. I would like to urge our children to be serious with their studies and refrain from doing crime.”

The Veeplaas community saw hundreds of young people take part in a 5km fun run, followed by a 1km u/9 fun run.

The junior soccer teams’ games also attracted a lot of attention.

Stafaans thanked the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for sponsoring trophies and medals for the Veeplaas June 16 Sports Day.

“I am very pleased to see many youth taking part in this programme. I would like to give thanks to the Nelson Mandela Bay top road runner, Deliwe Nyanga, for helping us to run this event successfully.

The local coaches and parents also played a phenomenal role. I would also like to thank the Funimfundo Primary School and its school governing body for allowing us to use the school’s premises during this programme.”
