JB Magongo Golf Challenge a huge success
THE number of participants rose remarkably during the 2024 edition of the JB Magongo Golf Challenge Tournament, which took place at the PE Golf Club in Mill Park on December 26.
According to JB Magongo Golf Foundation chairman, Revd Reuben Magongo, the number of golfers increased from 100 in 2023 to 140 in 2024. Revd Magongo highlighted that there were 40 learners and 60 adults in the 2023 edition of JB Magongo, but there were 60 learners and 80 adults who participated in the 2024 edition of the JB Magongo Golf Challenge.
Revd Magongo said, “We are over the moon to see more golfers than last year. It shows that our tournament is becoming a major event in the province. Last year, seven girls participated, but this year, we managed to draw 15 girls to take part in this tournament. Although it costs an arm and a leg to run this tournament, we decided that the learners must join the tournament free of charge.”
Revd Magongo revealed that the purpose of the tournament was to develop golf in the most disadvantaged townships, especially for the youth, so they can turn into professional golfers.
Learners and golfers came from as far as Port Alfred, Gqeberha, Kariega, and Humansdorp. Revd Magongo stated that they would introduce golf to Kama Primary School in New Brighton in 2025. The JB Magongo Golf Foundation is requesting a golfer to train the learners of Kama Primary, according to Revd Magongo.
The top golfers received trophies, medals, and various valuable items. Revd Magongo commended Ndlambe Municipality after they transported a trophy for their golfers from Port Alfred to Gqeberha.
Revd Magongo said, “I would like to thank Ndlambe Municipality and the following sponsors: GEPC Trencon Construction, AOS Engineers, Nedbank, MNT Group (Pty) Ltd, Rivoningo Consulting Engineer, Ibuya Consulting Engineers, Genuine Tenacity Consulting, Mekan Group, Sanlam, Tenacity Quantity Surveyors, Velempire Optimum Service Level in Reach, Bluewater Bay Fishing Enterprises (Pty) Ltd, Echalar Fishing, ABSA, Van Niekerk, Ngonyama Fishing (Pty) Ltd, Aray Fishing, and Kingfisher FM Radio. Mfunda said, “On behalf of the school, I welcome this initiative by the JB Magongo Golf Foundation in identifying Kama Primary as a pilot school in the townships. Being a caddy at Norwood Golf Club course in KwaZakhele when I was a young boy, I see a big opportunity for us a school in forming this partnership with the JB Magongo Golf Foundation. I fully understand that the sport of golf brings in discipline neatness, trustworthy, and motor skills development. Our school is going to sustain this programme so that we produce good golfers.”
