Multi-talented songbird, Ashmieka Moodley (13), will wing her way to Los Angeles next year to represent South Africa at the World Championship of Performing Arts, after bagging a silver medal for jazz vocal at the SA Championship of Performing Arts (SACOPA) in Rustenburg last month.
The Grade 7 learner at Westering Primary almost missed the audition for the Eastern Cape team after falling ill. Fortunately the organisers agreed to a virtual audition after she recovered.
Moodley’s passion for singing developed at age 6, after listening to Elsa in the film, Frozen. To gain more confidence she enrolled at the Feet on Fire Academy.
She then joined the Savoy Theatre and had roles in several musicals, including Matilda, Music Movies Magic and Making an Impact.
At SACOPA, Ashmieka was one of six participants from the Eastern Cape. More than 2 000 participants from across the country competed for a place in the national.
In tandem with a singing career, Moodley joined Premiere Models where she scooped several awards, including Junior Runway Model and Top Junior Model.
Academically she is also a high achiever.
Before she jets of to the States her parents face the daunting task of fundraising, as the trip is self-funded.
