ONE of the oldest Port Elizabeth East Football Association (PEEFA) clubs, Sollar Stars FC, will start its training sessions after the nationwide lockdown.
Stars, which is based in Veeplaas, was established 34 years ago and became defunct six years ago.
Sollar Stars was one of the toughest known sides in the football fraternity.
Stars had won a number of trophies during their campaign in PEEFA. Following the attrition of their key players and relocation of some homes to new areas, Stars were badly affected.
Then they started to perform dismally, although they managed a win at the SAPS Sport Against Crime Tournament 10 years ago. That was the last time Stars supporters saw their side collecting any silverware.
Stars were relegated from PEEFA’s top flight to a lower league because they could not go pound for pound with PEEFA’s top sides. As things stood, Sollar Stars were never seen playing after they failed to raise the bar in the PEEFA First Division.
The rich history of Sollar Stars was erased during the era of the players who were part of the relegated side.
Former president, Elliot Zonke, deputy president, Nombulelo Ndzuzo, former PRO, Madoda Madikane and former captain, Mthobeli Zitha held a meeting for reviving Sollar Stars early in March 2020. Madikane said that the club had kits for all the divisions, but they had no balls or other training equipment.
“We appeal to players from age nine to 16 to join us. We resolved that we would like to see players training after the lockdown.
“Our youth are faced with a number of social ills but sport minimises that.
“We would like to see our children playing sport, not roaming the streets,” said Madikane.
