GQEBERHA – Workers cleaning around the Feather Market Centre in Gqeberha made a grim discovery on Tuesday when they came across skeletal human remains behind the municipal property.
In a statement issued today (Tuesday, 29 September), the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said the South African Police Service (SAPS) responded to a complaint from the centre at about noon after workers discovered the remains while cleaning around the premises.
The remains comprised the lower part of a body, according to the municipality.
“The surrounding area was searched for the remaining part of the body; however, it was not found,” the municipality said.
An inquest case has been opened and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
“The Municipality is taken aback by the gruesome discovery of human remains behind the Feather Market Centre today,” the municipality added.
It clarified that the remains were not found inside the Feather Market Centre, which is municipal property.
“The Municipality will work closely with the SAPS and assist in any way possible to help get to the bottom of the matter and, where possible, assist with the identification of the remains,” it said.
