GQEBERHA – The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is urging residents, businesses and motorists to exercise extreme caution following a Level 5 disruptive rainfall warning issued by the South African Weather Service.

According to a statement, the warning is in effect for Wednesday, 3 June, and Thursday, 4 June.

The weather alert indicates a high likelihood of heavy rainfall across Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas, which may result in localised flooding, dangerous road conditions, infrastructure damage, disruptions to essential services and potential risks to life and property.

The Municipality’s Disaster Management Centre, emergency services and relevant departments have been placed on high alert.

According to the municipality, they are closely monitoring the situation and preparing a coordinated response to any incidents linked to the severe weather.

Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas are urged to take precautions to protect themselves, their families and property.

Safety precautions for residents and motorists

Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall. They are also strongly cautioned not to attempt to cross flooded roads, bridges, streams or low-water crossings.

The Municipality has further called on residents to:

• Stay informed through official weather updates and municipal communication platforms
• Secure loose outdoor items and protect valuables from possible water damage
• Clear drainage systems around homes and businesses where possible
• Avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions
• Report emergencies, flooding, fallen trees, damaged infrastructure or any threats to public safety immediately

Executive Mayor Cllr Babalwa Lobishe said the Municipality is taking proactive steps to safeguard communities and reduce the impact of the anticipated severe weather.

“We urge all residents to remain vigilant, heed all weather warnings and prioritise their safety,” she said. “While municipal teams are on standby and ready to respond, community cooperation is critical in reducing risks and preventing avoidable incidents during this period of severe weather.”

The Municipality will continue to provide updates as conditions develop and encourages residents to follow official communication channels for accurate and timely information.
