A security guard has died following a cash-in-transit robbery shootout in Korsten on December 11.
Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Avele Fumba, confirmed that the CIT robbery occurred at 08:30 on Durban Road.
He said preliminary investigations indicate that an Easy Cash vehicle was collecting money in the area when it was accosted by seven unidentified armed suspects, and a shootout ensued between the three security guards and the suspects.
“One of the guards sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries,” Fumba reported.
He stated that the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Fumba further stated that a multidisciplinary task team has been deployed and is following leads to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
“We appeal to members of the public to assist to accelerate the investigations, and their identities will remain anonymous,” he added.
This incident follows shortly after another cash-in-transit heist in Motherwell on Monday afternoon, December 9.
As previously reported by the PE Express, a G4S armored vehicle (AV) from Sasol garage en route to Kwazakhele was ambushed on the M17 near Motherwell by a number of heavily armed suspects in two white bakkies.
Elaborating on the incident, Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana said a multidisciplinary team was activated to attend the CIT robbery scene.
“On their way to the scene, the team was reportedly confronted by another assailant’s vehicle with a hail of bullets, and a shootout ensued wherein the suspects fled towards Kwazakhele. Further reports indicated that the accused alighted from the bakkie while shooting at the police and hijacked an Audi A1, then fled.
“A few meters away, the suspects are said to have jumped off the Audi and fled on foot. The team apprehended six suspects aged between 28 and 42, four of whom sustained injuries.”
“Intelligence information was received while processing the scene about the second bakkie where it was found abandoned at Soweto Township in Gqeberha,” he reported on the incident.
The six suspects were expected to make their first court appearance before Motherwell Magistrates Court today, Wednesday, December 11.
