THE legendary saxophonist, flute player and composer, McCoy Mrubata, has announced the first Brasskap Village Fest, taking place at Boardwalk Convention Centre on December 11, from 18:00.
The festival features a sizzling line-up that speaks to why the Brasskap Project was birthed.
Award-winning music powerhouse, known for her hit single, Being Woman, Titi Luzipo, will take music lovers on a melodious Afro-jazz journey.
Joining in to bring the Brasskap Village to the Gqeberha shores will be Dumza Maswana, who will serenade the patrons with his deep soothing baritone sounds.
Maswana is known for his fusion of traditional, spiritual, soul and jazz music to create sonic experiences that inspire and heal.
Mrubata, himself, is among the musicians who will give festival goers an experience of a lifetime.
Luyanda Madope, a pianist, composer, producer and musical director, will set the stage ablaze with his live performance, where people will get a taste of his recently released music and older songs.
Mlungisi Gegana, a double and electric bassist, band leader, and music composer, is one of the faces people can look forward to seeing him perform live at Boardwalk Convention Centre, while bass guitarist, Thammy Mdluli, is also among the greats who will be enchanting audiences at the Brasskap Village Fest.
“What a momentous occasion this is; after 12 years of working on this concept, I am excited that what was once a dream to contribute towards bridging the gap between my contemporaries and making things easier for the young generations in music to cut through the clutter of this industry, while learning from the older musicians, is coming to life. The project kicked off with workshops which allowed the aspiring musicians an opportunity to interact with older and experienced musicians.
“It was in 2017 – 10 years after the first album – Volume 1 and the subsequent volumes 2 and 3 of the Brasskap Project – that Luyanda Madope and I decided on taking this project further and introduce The Brasskap Village, which would be a home to host events such as this one, as well as concerts, music workshops and masterclasses.
“This fest is one of many to come. If we don’t take a stand for our youth – our future leaders – who will? It is best that we leave a legacy for the upcoming generations, and there is no better way than doing it through the powerful language that everyone speaks and understands – and that is music,” said Mrubatha.
The organisers aim at staging this event annually, focusing on each of the nine provinces to reach and empower as many people as possible. “We look forward to a mesmeric evening with our fans and supporters. After a two-year dry season for festival goers, this is an opportunity to get out there and enjoy the serenading sounds and network and contribute towards strengthening the music industry. We thank the partners – National Arts Council, Boardwalk, Creative Blackground and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture – for seeing this project as a catalyst for change in our industry,” said Madope.
