SAPS recovers five illegal firearms, 66 live rounds off Gqeberha streets


GQEBERHA – Between 13 and 16 June, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Nelson Mandela Bay District arrested five male suspects and recovered five unlicensed firearms alongside 66 live rounds of ammunition.

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, the arrests took place across four policing precincts in Gqeberha, namely New Brighton, Chatty, Gelvandale and KwaZakhele.

“The operations targeted hot-spot areas for serious and violent crimes, assisted by the deployment of intelligence operatives,” he said.

Beetge added that five male suspects had been charged with contravening the Firearms Control Act.

Acting District Commissioner for the Nelson Mandela Bay District, Brigadier Loyiso Ngalo, remarked, “We are conducting operations in various hot-spot areas of the district. The deployment of crime intelligence operatives in the area is yielding positive results,” concluded Ngalo.
