Police have opened an inquest following a freak accident which led to the death of two private construction workers in Windvogel, Gelvandale today, February 7, 2024.
It is alleged that at approximately 13:00, SAPS Gelvandale responded to a complaint in 3rd Avenue, Windvogel.
Sandra Janse Van Rensburg of SAPS said on arrival they were informed that the two workers aged 33 and 38 years old were busy working in a trench when the walls of the trench collapsed thus burying them .
“Both workers were trapped beneath and although medics immediately responded, their lives could not be saved. The trench walls collapsed for the second time as attempts were made to retrieve their bodies. The fire department was also on the scene to assist.”
“The names of the deceased will only be released once the next of kin have been informed. An inquest is opened for further investigation,” Van Rensburg concluded.
