SA Navy to celebrate World Hydrographic Day in Gqeberha this week

The South African Navy, in co-operation with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, will celebrate World Hydrography Day from June 21 to 25 in Gqeberha.

The celebrations aim to raise awareness of the role hydrography plays in the maritime industry under the theme; Hydrography- underpinning the digital twin of the ocean.

International Hydrography Day is celebrated annually on June 21 to underline the importance of hydrography particularly in protecting maritime reserves and promoting safe navigation in local and international waters.

This is an important event on the South African Navy’s calendar as it is the only organisation authorised to conduct national surveys and produce hydrographic charts in Southern African waters.

Here is the breakdown of the events:
  • 18-19 June: Arrival of SA Navy Ships, Port of Port Elizabeth Harbour, Quay 100
  • 20 June: SA Navy Band Concert, Raymond Mhlaba Indoor Sports Centre, Motherwell
  • 21 June: Media Briefing, onboard SAS MENDI at PE Harbour, Quay 100 from 12:30 at 14:00.
  • 22 June: Chief of the SA Navy handing over of first legacy project, Kama Primary School , in New Brighton
  • 23 June: Chief of SA Navy handing over of second legacy project , SS MENDI Memorial Site in New Brighton
  • 23-25 June: SA Navy ships open for public visit (free entrance) and career exhibitions.
  • 24 June: SA Navy Music Gala Concert , Nangoza Jebe Hall, in New Brighton
  • 25 June: Right of Entry Parade, Embizweni Square, New Brighton and Wreath Laying Ceremony (09:00 – 12:00)

As a build-up to the Right of Entry Parade in New Brighton, the South African Navy Band will be performing at various locations within the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
