Nelson Mandela Bay’s K9 Search and Rescue Unit is still trying to retrieve the body of a biker who allegedly jumped off the Bloukrans Bridge in Tsitsikamma on Monday, November 7.
At approximately 15:00 on Monday, SAPS Storms River was alerted to a suspicious motorbike that was parked partially in bushes near the Bloukrans Bridge. A search was immediately conducted to locate the owner of the bike.
Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that with the use of binoculars, police spotted something colourful in the bushes below the bridge which raised suspicion. Early yesterday morning, November 8, the Search and Rescue Unit, SAPS Diving Unit, Metro EMS from Nelson Mandela Bay and the Sarah Baartman Baartman District as well as SAPS Storms River members, were deployed to the bridge.
“The Search and Rescue team managed to abseil to a certain level where they could confirm their suspicion that there was a body of a person in the bushes below. Attempts to abseil to the bottom from the 216m bridge was challenging and the mission was temporarily aborted pending air support,” Naidu said.
The team will resume their retrieval attempt on today, Wednesday, November 9.
“At this stage, the identity of the owner of the bike/victim is withheld until the body is retrieved and a formal identification is done,” she added.
