RESIDENTS of Port Elizabeth have been urged by Fidelity ADT to remain vigilant about home security during lockdown.
This follows an incident in the area recently, when suspects broke into a residential property where the garage was apparently left open.
“One of our armed response officers responded to an alarm activation at the address in Rowallan Park,” said Ryan Britz, branch manager for Fidelity ADT in Port Elizabeth.
“When he arrived, he saw the garage door was standing open. On investigation he encountered two unknown suspects, who surrendered to our officer.”
Members of the SAPS soon arrived at the address to assist the armed response officer.
“There did not appear to be any signs of forcible entry, which led officers to deduce that the garage door was left open. The home owner expressed his thanks to all officers involved but chose not to press charges against the suspects.
“They were then released,” said Britz.
“The best defence against burglars, opportunistic thieves or armed robbers is to make your property as unattractive to criminals as possible by implementing extra precautions to keep your belongings safe, inside and outside the home.”
With families at home, there are cars in the driveway, bicycles, toys and tools in the garden and often doors, windows and security gates are left open. These things appeal to criminals and homes could be targeted, during the day or night.
“Tightening up small vulnerabilities can amount to a huge relief when it comes to home security,” said Britz. – REPORTER
