A concerned Nelson Mandela Bay resident has expressed exasperation over the inaction of authorities to repair two prominent potholes on Wessel Swart Drive, approaching AG Visser Avenue in Gqeberha. Despite numerous complaints spanning almost two years, the potholes remain a hazard to motorists.
The potholes, which have become a permanent fixture on the road, pose a significant risk to drivers, particularly those unfamiliar with the area.
In rainy weather, the potholes are often hidden from view, and drivers who are not aware of their presence are forced to swerve suddenly to avoid them, putting themselves and others at risk of accidents.
“It’s a miracle that no one has been seriously injured yet,” said the resident, who wished to remain anonymous.
“I’ve seen numerous occasions where motorists have swerved at the last minute to avoid the potholes, almost causing accidents. It’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.
“Also, there are children who often walk there going to and coming from school; their lives are at stake.
“Can you imagine what would happen if a swerving car rammed into them? It’s getting warmer now, more joggers and cyclists use that road and they’re also not safe.
“No man, it’s not nice, something must be done, we have been patient long enough.”
Ward 6 Councillor, Gert Engelbrecht, acknowledged the resident’s concerns and explained that the potholes were re-reported recently, with a commitment from the municipality to allocate R500 000 for pothole repairs in the ward.
Engelbrecht stressed that the ward office has been proactive in identifying urgent repairs, but funding and bureaucratic delays have hindered progress.
“The overall condition of the roads in Ward 6 is appalling, but not due to a lack of effort from the Ward 6 office,” Engelbrecht said. “We have capable municipal officials, but funding and lack of support from the back office contribute widely to the delay in repairs.
“We value the safety of our motorists and their investments and would like to have our roads in pristine condition.”
