A RADIO station aimed at recognising front-line workers during the COVID-19 pandemic was recently launched in Nelson Mandela Bay.
SoulStream Radio is an initiative of a non-profit organisation, which will also be focusing on COVID-19 patients and survivors, by playing gospel music which can be heard at hospitals and quarantine facilities across the metro.
According to launch director, Pastor Richard Keet, this station will bring hope and peace to those that need it during this time.
Provincial Police Commissioner in the Eastern Cape, Lt. Gen. Liziwe Ntshinga, who joined the launched of the station, said in her congratulatory message of support how grateful she was for an invitation to attend.
“An initiative such as this is contributing to the Safer City Model, which will be launched soon in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
“The strategic objectives of the South African Police Service require that we form formidable partnerships with government and private entities,” Ntshinga said.
Touching on the topic of gender-based violence, Ntshinga said that women should take a decision that every day would be Women’s Day.
“We are going to make a noise so loud that men are going to feel our strength as women.
“During this pandemic and when the president announced the lockdown, it was noted how gender-based violence played out – to the detriment of women.
“The killing of police officers in the Nelson Mandela Bay district has a devastating effect not only on safety and security but also the communities.
“Crime affects the livelihoods of our people and the murder of one person is a murder too many,” she said.
“It is critical for all of us to work together to mitigate these challenges.
“As the SAPS, we appreciate this beautiful initiative,” she added.
Nelson Mandela Bay acting Mayor, Tshonono Buyeye, also welcomed the birth of SoulStream Radio.
“Community radio stations are critical pillars of a metro.
“They provide a foundation for the local communities to inform and be informed of current affairs relating to the specific communities in the language of the people,” he said.
“Community radio stations give a voice to the voiceless.
“They promote economic growth and create jobs.
“The establishment of SoulStream radio is exciting for the community.
“May this station fly high above the sky,” Buyeye added.
Since this is an online radio station, it is not yet available on an FM frequency.
