Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu has announced that all those who qualify and have applied for the R350 social relief grant will receive the money by June, 2022.

According to the Minister, the social grants have accounted for 99.6% of the department’s R257-billion total budget.

“The department has allocated R44-million for the relief distress grant, which will be paid out to over 10 million South Africans every month. This is in addition to the 18 million people that are already on other types of grants, including old age and child support,” Zulu said.

Zulu was speaking when she tabled her 2022-2023 budget in Parliament on Friday.

“Our system for checking whether people do deserve this money or not, is in place, hence we ask them to re-apply. Secondly, we are also working with the Department of Economic Development as well as Small and Medium Enterprises, because we believe that the next big thing that we must focus on, is to empower informal business, small and medium enterprises.”

“I can even tell you that we got money for instance from the Chinese embassy which was meant to be money that has to buy food parcels. We then decided, we are diverting some of that money into your small and medium and informal businesses, who lost their livelihoods.”
