RACE organisers are hoping that a top local athlete could be taking home the rich prize money, totalling R350 500 to be won in the third 1 City Marathon on Sunday, October 28.
Last year the visiting athletes made a clean sweep of the prize money, Ikhamva athlete Zolani Mabhongo was the overall 2017 winner in 2:24:03, and Samukeliso Moyo (Nedbank AGN) led the women home in 2:59:57.
Local athletes who shone were Desmond Zibi, of Achilles Athletics Association, who won the 50-59 age category in a record time of 2:42:10 and Ndileka Mvakwendlu (Tinhara) who was the first local woman in 3:09:27.
Both the 42.2km marathon and relay race, presented by EP Athletics in partnership with NMB Municipality, will start and finish at the City Hall, PE. The race will follow a circular route through the streets of Walmer, Pari Park and Mount Pleasant.
Entry fee for the marathon is R120; however, EPA-registered participants 60 and over will pay R60. The temporary licence, required for the 42.2km only, is R30. Relay team fee is R160.

Registration and late entries will take place at the PE City Hall from 16:00 to 18:00 on Saturday, October 27, and from 05:00 on the morning of the race, Sunday, October 28.
