A horse has been killed and others went missing during protest action at the Fairview Race Course in Draaifontein Road this morning.
Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, who was still at the scene at 10:30 today, confirmed that people have been protesting at the stables. She also confirmed that one horse was killed.
“It is alleged that the horse was stabbed and assaulted, but at this stage it cannot be confirmed how it died,” Niadu said.
She added that during the protest, 28 horses were let out of the stables. Some had been found, but Naidu could not confirm how many were still missing.
When asked what the reason for the protest was, Naidu said that she wasn’t sure at this point, but it was allegedly related to workers being let go in February this year and UIF-related issues.
A case of malicious damage to property will be investigated.
According to Port Elizabeth Traffic Updates, the massive protesting has been on the go from early this morning.
“We have received reports that one horse has been killed and a few were hit with a panga. The police are on the scene,” it said on Facebook.
In a video posted on their Facebook page, a number of protesters can be seen chasing horses.
